Choosing Technology When Building A Website

When building a website one of the common questions asked is what is the optimal technology for this process, PHP or ASP.NET, in order to reach the most desired and correct decision, by presenting both the advantages and disadvantages of each of the technologies we can reach a conclusion and clarification when choosing a technology for building a website.

What is PHP technology and the difference between it and ASP.NET

PHP was a scripting language designed for processing and analyzing information and programming web applications on the server side, also previous work with languages such as C and Perl will provide a basis and a better understanding of the ways of using this language.
The PHP scripting language enables the construction of dynamic web pages such as HTML and XML pages and sends them to the browser while working in coordination with databases and databases such as MySQL and Oracle.
PHP was one of the first languages for programming dynamic websites and following it came the competitor from Microsoft, the ASP.NET language.

Advantages of PHP

  • You can build an entire website using only one PHP file.
  • PHP is built and based by open source and its support community on the Internet is wide, so it can be used in a completely free distribution.
  • Proficiency in the PHP language can contribute to opening many doors and opportunities in the high-tech market.
  • has a page error management system for uploading error-free web pages.
  • There is a wide pool of library functions under development for the programmers such as functions for data encryption and file compression.
  • PHP is run on Apache servers, fast and secure servers that allow open source support and thus any existing security breach can be immediately closed.

What is ASP.NET technology

This technology was an improvement and upgrade of the old ASP language and was launched by Microsoft using ASP.NET technology, you can work with different script languages such as Python, Perlscript Jscript and more.
ASP.NET has as many disadvantages as its advantages, it is a technology that requires the utilization of a lot of resources and long information processing times which may leave the surfers waiting for long seconds until the execution of the command is finished and thus constitutes a failure against PHP which has fast servers and immediate response times.
Also, due to it belonging to the Microsoft company, which is known for the need to purchase licenses in order to use its various products, such as the Windows operating system, the costs of the above-mentioned platform are not cheap, and among the expenses are the need for expensive storage servers, software development, and the professional himself

Advantages of ASP.NET

  • ASP.NET technology was very developed and has a professional development environment that uses auxiliary programming such as WebMatrix, C++ Builder and more.
  • ASP.NET was a flexible and convenient technology for the programmers and had a relatively simple design.
  • The security system as on Apache servers of the PHP language we were strong and efficient.
  • The demand for professionals specializing in ASP.NET technology for the high-tech job market is huge.
  • This technology communicates perfectly with many other Microsoft applications and systems.

the price element

price was a payment factor when choosing such a decision between two technologies that will be used when building a website for the client, and when I talk about price, it should be noted that not only the initial investment but all the surrounding aspects, i.e. maintenance costs,  Implementation, suitable storage servers, the price of the platform and the licenses if required.
  • The cost versus benefit ratio of PHP technology is much greater than that of ASP.NET, and this is because PHP is used to work under open source in an open and wide support community that everything is provided for free, unlike ASP.NET technology which includes the purchase of licenses, the use of modules, systems and libraries as Microsoft   usually does with every product it puts on the market.

security system

PHP technology ran on Apache servers which are known for their reliability, speed and high security, in contrast to ASP.NET which ran on IIS servers which are known in the Internet world as servers whose hacking frequency was one of the highest and causes a lot of frustration among programmers and professionals.

Working with open source

Open code is an excellent option for saving costs by purchasing licenses, also open code is a huge advantage in solving bugs of all kinds, when fixing the bug in the two technologies is different from each other, while in PHP fixing the bug was a fast and efficient process in contrast to ASP.NET which requires a long process until the bug treatment is carried out, sorted out and distributed back.

In the end, programming can be done with both technologies and the choice depends on the programmer himself and his way of working and his work environment, while the PHP language is a Cross-Platform language, meaning that its support is on several platforms unlike ASP.NET which is only supported by the Windows platform, and since this platform has paid licenses and most of the servers today are Linux.
